Apple is gearing up for major hardware and software announcements at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference, focusing on AI. However, the tech giant plans to kick things off sooner with the anticipated launch of the OLED iPad Pro on May 7.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this device is expected to debut with an M4 chip and a neural engine, marking it as Apple’s “first truly AI-powered device.” Gurman suggests the May event could be an opportunity for Apple to outline its AI chip strategy.

This would set the stage for explaining how the iPad Pro and other M4 devices will incorporate Apple’s AI features in iPadOS 18. Potential integrations include Apple-developed on-device features and chatbots from other entities like Google or OpenAI.

Aside from AI capabilities, the next Pro models are anticipated to feature OLED screens and new accessories. One notable accessory is the next Apple Pencil, expected to offer haptic feedback. While Gurman didn’t delve into specific uses, the feature could enhance drawing experiences by simulating textures.

Additionally, there are rumors about the Apple Pencil supporting new gestures and magnetic tips for easy swapping. These enhancements could improve user interaction, especially in virtual environments.

Regarding the iPad Pro’s design, Gurman describes it as the most significant redesign since 2018. However, he primarily highlights the OLED screen as a major upgrade. While some CAD drawings hinted at a thinner design with rounded edges, similar to the iPhone 15 Pro, the overall reaction to these potential design changes has been mixed.

The focus on AI could position the iPad Pro at the forefront of Apple’s technology offerings, targeting users interested in both AI and high-performance tablets. Despite this, the general appeal of the iPad Pro’s AI features might not sway most consumers, especially with more affordable options like the iPad Air available.
