6 Riverside teachers, ex-school trustee honored at Crystal Apple Awards

Six Riverside teachers and a former school board member were saluted at this year’s Crystal Apple Awards.

The 19th annual event, sponsored by the Riverside Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was Wednesday, April 10.

Crystal Apples are awarded to one teacher in each Riverside Unified School District high school and chosen by seminary students who attend a religion class each morning an hour before school starts, a news release states.

Teachers are nominated by the students for “their excellence in teaching and their Christ-like attributes,” the release states.

Kathy Allavie, a former longtime Riverside school board member, won the Champion of Education award. It recognizes someone who has dedicated their life to the education of Riverside youths.

This year’s teacher winners are:

  • Arlington High School — Stephen Stearns
  • King High School — Vanessa Martinez
  • North High School — Alexander Armijo
  • Poly High School — Eric Chavez
  • Ramona High School — Fernando Borja
  • Riverside STEM Academy —Rachel Wampler
