Should You Avoid Buying Too-Soft Sweaters?

Nothing beats a cozy cashmere sweater during the winter. From its comfortable fit to its supreme softness, the cold-weather staple is a wardrobe essential for all. When it comes to shopping for a sweater, however, it’s important to be diligent and keep in mind a handful of guidelines to avoid splurging on a low-quality cashmere.

Racked broke down the dos and don’ts of sweater shopping, and one tip caught our attention. Softness is something we tend to associate with quality, but Cuyana co-founder Shilpa Shah explains higher grade cashmere isn’t necessarily silky-soft. “In reality with cashmere, the better cashmere is not super soft to touch. It softens over time.” Shah adds that some brands overwash the yarn to give it that lived-in softness consumers love and associate with luxury.

Racked advises consumers to “beware of anything extra fuzzy or crazy super soft at the time of purchase. This could be a sign of over-washing.” And there you have it—fluffy softness isn’t always a good thing.
