Wi-Fi To Now Be Available On Domestic Flights? Govt Approves Internet Access At 3,000 Meters Altitude

The Indian government clarified that Wi-Fi services aboard aircraft will only be accessible once the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters. According to the Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024, passengers can use internet services only when electronic devices are permitted, ensuring seamless and safe internet access while in the air.

Altitude Requirement for Wi-Fi Access

The government’s rule mandates a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters for mobile communication services, preventing interference with ground-based networks in Indian airspace. This updated guideline, based on the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules of 2018, emphasizes that in-flight internet will only be enabled once the aircraft has reached the specified altitude. As per the newly notified rule reported by PTI, the government stated, “Notwithstanding the minimum height in Indian airspace referred to in sub-rule (1), internet services through Wi-Fi in aircraft shall be made available when electronic devices are permitted to be used in the aircraft.”

Connectivity with Safety

The updated connectivity rules follow the government’s structured approach to maintaining network stability and security on board while balancing passenger convenience. These amendments are designed to ensure that passengers can enjoy internet access without compromising the safety standards essential for in-flight communication systems.

Free Wi-Fi on Vistara Flights

In addition to the government’s altitude rule, there is exciting news for passengers on Vistara, the Indian airline under the TATA-Singapore Airlines joint venture. As the first Indian airline to introduce complimentary Wi-Fi on international flights, Vistara began offering 20 minutes of free Wi-Fi service in July 2024. This service is available on select international routes aboard the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The airline’s complimentary 20-minute internet access is accessible to all passengers, enabling them to stay connected in flight. Vistara’s move to introduce Wi-Fi aligns with global in-flight trends, offering passengers the opportunity to purchase extended Wi-Fi plans after the initial free session. Passengers can buy these plans using Indian credit or debit cards and receive one-time passwords via email during the session.
