In a new development, actor Payal Ghosh who had accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual assault has now joined  Union minister Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (A) in Mumbai. She has been named as the Vice President of its women’s wing, according to news agency ANI on Monday.
Ghosh had recently accused Anurag Kashyap of rape, a charge denied by the filmmaker. The actor joined the party in the presence of party chief and Union minister Ramdas Athawale who said, “I thank her for joining the party and I welcome her.”
It was in September that a rape case was filed by the actress against Anurag Kashyap. She had also met Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari, demanding action against the filmmaker. She was accompanied by Athawale, a Rajya Sabha member. The two had also met Mumbai Police joint commissioner (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangare Patil, seeking security for the actor.
The First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Versova Police station on September 22 after the actor, along with her lawyer Nitin Satpute, approached the police. The FIR was registered under Sections 376 (I) (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In her police complaint, Payal Ghosh alleged that Kashyap raped her at a place on Yari Road in Versova in 2013.
Actor Sherlyn Chopra had extended her support to actor Payal Ghosh as well at the time.
Sherlyn had tweeted, “Dear @iampayalghosh, pls understand that u r not alone in this fight. All those who value truthfulness and integrity r with u. They say – why did Payal take 5 years to lodge a complaint. Well, it takes a lot of bravery, resilience n grit to disclose such experiences. It’s not easy.”
Further adding, “It’s ridiculous to argue that a woman must report an untoward incident as and when it happens. Does reporting the matter years later make the truth untrue?? I thank @KanganaTeam for encouraging us to speak the truth and not feel intimidated by the high and mighty.. #TruthMatters.”
