Nana Patekar comments on end of superstardom era, remembers Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor: ‘Aaj kal har hafte…’

In the exclusive interaction, Nana Patekar said that today stardom is measured as per the box office figures.

On The Anupam Kher Show, Shah Rukh Khan made a bold statement, by calling himself, “Last of the stars.” The super-stardom, the craze for an actor has been quite debatable, especially after the boom of social media, and OTT. Veteran actor Nana Patekar also shared his thoughts about the end of the superstardom era, and how the value, craze, and fan following of stars change within a week.

While promoting his upcoming film The Vaccine War with DNA, Nana Patekar remembered late acting legends, and superstars’ whose stardom remains intact, “Uss waqt ke stars aap dekho. Yusuf saab (Dilip Kumar) ko hum bhool nahi paate, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand saab ko hum bhool nahi paate. Woh guzar gaye toh bhi hum unko bhool nahi paate (Look at the stars we had. We can’t forget late Yusuf saab, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. We still remember them).” Nana made a big remark on today’s actors, and their questionable stardom, and asserted that nowadays stardom is measured by box office figures. The actor said, “Humare yaha aaj kal har hafte mein star badalta hai. Yeh sab aankade hai bas (Today, stardom lasts for a week. These are all figures).”

In the same conversation, Nana opened up about OTT, and how artistes like him have been given a platform to showcase their talent. Nana asserted that due to the emergence of OTT, many stars like him, who are not ‘quintessential heroes’ are getting opportunities to showcase their talent. “Uss waqt hum ko chance milta nahi tha. Humare jaise chehre le ke aaye hue log ko. Jaise Om (Puri) ko chehra nahi tha, Irrfan ko koi chehra nahi tha. Mera koi chehra nahi tha, Manoj (Bajpayee) ko koi chehra nahi tha. Raghubir (Yadav) ko chehra nahi tha. Ab hum sabko ek stage mil gaya hai apna hunar dikhane ka. Logo ne unko pehchaan liya, aur unhe achha kehne lage (We didn’t get our chance that time. Actors with average looks like me, Om Puri, Irrfan, Manoj Bajpayee, and Raghubir Yadav didn’t get their chance. But now will OTT, we have a stage, where we showcase our talents and people accept us). After the emergence of OTT, the artistes have another medium after theatre and cinema to showcase their talents.”
Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri-directed The Vaccine War stars an ensemble cast, including Nana Patekar, Raima Sen, Pallavi Joshi, Girija Oak Godbole, Saptami Gowda. The movie will release in cinemas on Septmber 28.
