Meet only Indian actor to gross Rs 1000 crore in a year twice; it’s not Shah Rukh, Salman, Aamir, Prabhas, Rajinikanth

This actor has had two calendar years where his films grossed over Rs 1000 crore.

Shah Rukh Khan has broken several box office records this year in his comeback to the big screen. If all goes well, the actor will soar past Aamir Khan’s 2016 record of an actor with highest box office gross in a year. This is the first time Shah Rukh’s films have collected Rs 1000 crore at the box office. In fact, only a handful actors have had that honour, and only one of them has done it twice.

The actor with most Rs 1000-crore calendar years

Akshay Kumar is the only actor who has had back-to-back years in which his films collectively grossed over Rs 1000 crore. The actor achieved this astonishing feat in 2018 and 2019, the peak of his stardom when he delivered back to back hits at the box office. In 2018, Akshay starred in Pad Man, Gold,  and 2.0, which collectively grossed Rs 1111 crore worldwide. He also had a cameo in Simmba, another box office success. The following year, Akshay delivered more hits in Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4, and Good Newwz.
End of Akshay Kumar’s run of hits

It took a pandemic to stop Akshay’s incredible run. In 2020, the actor did not have a single theatrical release. His only film that year – Laxxmi – premiered directly on OTT. In 2021, he returned with a hit – Sooryavanshi, but Bell Bottom failed to work, ending his streak of 1000-crore calendar years. 2022 was even worse for the star as he had a spate of unsuccessful big budget films in Ram Setu, Bachchhan Paandey, Raksha Bandhan, and Samrat Prithviraj. However, tide turned recently for Akshay when OMG 2 crossed Rs 200 crore worldwide. The actor would now hope that he can revive this run with upcoming titles like Mission Raniganj, Bade Miyan Chota Miyan, and the untitled Soorarai Pottru remake.

Other actors with Rs 1000 crore calendar years

The first actor from India to have filme earning Rs 1000 crore in one year was Salman Khan, whose films Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo collectively earned Rs 1350 crore in 2015. The following year, Aamir Khan joined the rank courtesy Dangal. In 2017, Prabhas and Rana Daggubati also entered the club with Baahubali 2’s success. In 2022, KGF 2’s success brought Yash to this elite club while RRR’s box office numbers caused Jr NTR and Ram Charan to be a part of it. And of course, Shah Rukh Khan is also a part of the club now.
