Veteran Kannada filmmaker Vijay Reddy is no more. He died of a prolonged illness at the age of 87. Reddy was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai. “He breathed his last on Friday night, after approximately 6 pm, due to organ failure,” Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President DR Jairaj said.
Vijay Reddy was also residing in Chennai, which he lovingly called his ‘home’. He is best remembered for films like ‘Gandhada Gudi’, ‘Bhakta Prahlada’ and ‘Na Ninna Mareyalare’.
Kannada film actor Puneeth Rajkumar (also Dr. Rajkumar’s son) shared the news of his passing away. He tweeted, “Vijay Reddy, who had directed my father Dr Rajkumar’s movies such as Gandhada Gudi, Mayura and Na Ninna Mareyalare passed away.”
The actor also offered his condolences to the family. Praying for Reddy’s soul, Rajkumar called himself fortunate to have worked in Reddy-directed film ‘Bhakta Prahlada’.

Vijay Reddy became an icon in the Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, after he highlighted the mafia in the industry through his film ‘Gandhada Gudi’. The movie was also Dr Rajkumar’s 150th film.
He was also responsible for giving Shankar Nag an identity of the ‘angry young man’ with the 1980 film ‘Auto Raja’. Apart from Kannada films, Reddy had also directed movies in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi.
