NEW YORK – The high-end retailers on Fifth Avenue are not at the top of the list of issues facing the city following the election of Donald Trump, according to New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio.

In a press conference Wednesday after a meeting with the president-elect, Blasio addressed a question about the traffic situation and street closures by responding: “I will not tell you that Gucci and Tiffany are my central concerns in life, but I will say the traffic situation is a very real problem and it is magnified, of course, because we’re going into the holidays.”

De Blasio said he will meet with Police Commissioner James O’Neill and hold a press conference Friday “to talk about this in detail. The commissioner is meeting with the Secret Service shortly and will be in a much better position to give you a sense of the balance that we will strike.

“Obviously, traffic in Midtown has to flow and obviously the president-elect and his entire team have to be protected.”

The area around Trump Tower has been plagued by protests and surrounded by barricades, cutting off access to many of the retail stores in close proximity to Trump’s home.

Last week, De Blasio was more flippant, telling reporters: “Look, we’re talking about the next few months and then Donald Trump’s going to be living in the White House. Yeah, there’ll be some disruption, but look at the bright side — the holidays are coming. Midtown is going to be messed up anyway, you know. I think people are going to manage. They’re going to make their adjustments.”
