Three decades after “What’s Happening!!” child star Danielle Spencer survived a deadly automobile collision and 10 years after she overcame prejudiced stoppage from a successive spinal surgery, a actress-turned-veterinarian found herself confronting nonetheless another medical crisis: cancer.
Spencer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and notwithstanding her medical credentials as a practicing veterinarian, Spencer tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” that cancer was something she didn’t see coming.
“It was shocking,” she says. “I’m still meditative of myself as a youngster ― not 51 years old.”
Doctors endorsed that Spencer bear a mastectomy. “I said, “Well, OK. Let’s do it… Matter of fact, let’s take a other one off too,’” she says.
With a support of her family, Spencer had a successful double mastectomy, yet she describes her whole cancer distress as a really dim duration in her life.
“It was only an awful time. we had to keep praying,” Spencer says. “Everyone that would try to inspire me, they didn’t wish me to consider of suicide, even yet we had deliberate it. It was really a severe time, since [cancer] ravages your body. Also, mentally, it changes you.”
